Description:
The Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP) seeks to increase the multicultural diversity of the food and agricultural scientific and professional workforce, and advance the educational achievement of all Americans by providing competitive grants to colleges and universities that have (1) a demonstrable capacity to carry out the teaching of the food and agricultural sciences, and (2) unique capabilities for achieving representation of diverse cultural groups in the fields of agriculture, natural resources, forestry, veterinary medicine, home economics, or closely allied disciplines. The scholarships are intended to encourage outstanding students from racial and ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the food and agricultural sciences to pursue and complete baccalaureate degrees in these fields.
A secondary purpose of the MSP is to help the United States achieve the objective of workforce diversity within the Federal government, and particularly within the USDA. Therefore, USDA will endeavor to offer special mentoring opportunities to Scholars in the program. Grantee institutions will be expected to encourage Scholars to participate in such opportunities.
There is no commitment by USDA to fund any particular application or to make a specific number of awards. In FY 2003, CSREES anticipates that approximately $940,000 will be available for support of this program.
